How Much Does a Dumpster Rental Cost in 2026?

Most US roll-off rentals land somewhere between about $350 and $1,050, depending on size, where you live, and how heavy your debris is. Advertised prices sit at the low end; what people actually end up paying sits higher. Below are the 2026 numbers from three independent data sets, plus the fees that make a bill grow.

Quick answer

Operator data in the Docket 2026 Benchmark Report shows a similar spread, roughly $420–$590 for a 10-yard up to $830–$1,330 for a 40-yard depending on region and term.

Why the gap between columns? Published prices are starting rates. Dumpster Enterprises found that 47% of local haulers add at least one charge on top of the quoted price, most often disposal billed by weight, card processing fees, sales tax or fuel surcharges (Dumpster Enterprises 2026 price report).

Where you live matters more than anything

For the identical 20-yard container, the Dumpster Price Index found state medians from $300 in Nebraska to $664 in New Hampshire, a $364 difference (Dumpster Price Index).

New Hampshire$664

Weight is the big one. About 1 in 4 dumpsters exceed their included weight, typically by about a ton and a half, and nearly half of roofing dumpsters go over (Dumpster Enterprises 2026 price report). Concrete, dirt and other heavy debris usually go in smaller, low-wall boxes priced separately, with a 2026 median of $847 (Dumpster Enterprises 2026 price report).

What sets the base price

According to the Dumpster Price Index, four things move a roll-off quote: the tipping fee at the hauler's landfill or transfer station, drive time, how long the container sits with you, and what goes in it, since clean single-material loads are cheaper to dispose of than mixed debris (Dumpster Price Index).

How to avoid a surprise bill

  1. Get every quote in writing with the same four numbers: base price, included tons, price per extra ton, and price per extra day.
  2. Ask whether the quote includes disposal, tax, fuel surcharge and card fees, or if those are billed later.
  3. For heavy loads (shingles, concrete, dirt), compare on total cost at your expected weight. Dumpster Enterprises found the lowest quote ended up costing more in 29% of cities, and in 46% of cities for a full 20-yard of shingles (Dumpster Enterprises 2026 price report).
  4. If you are between two sizes on a light load, the larger size usually costs less than a second haul (Dumpster Price Index). See What size dumpster do I need?
  5. Mark the drop spot before delivery: allow the container's length plus about 10 ft for the truck and roughly 22 ft of overhead clearance (Dumpster Price Index).
